Georgian-Abkhaz Talks Thwarted

A session of the Georgian-Abkhaz Coordinating Council scheduled for August 2 was thwarted because of the Abkhaz side?s refusal to participate in talks, Merab Antadze, the Georgian State Minister for Conflict Resolution Issues, said on August 1.
 
He said at a news conference that the Abkhaz side expressed a protest regarding the composition of the Georgian delegation. However, the Minister did not specify exactly which member of the Georgian delegation was unacceptable to the Abkhaz side.

On July 28 Abkhaz negotiators refused to participate in weekly talks in Chuburkhinji village in the Gali district, citing the presence of representatives of the Tbilisi-based Abkhaz government-in-exile.
 
?We call on the Abkhaz side to return to the negotiation table,? Merab Antadze said.
 
The Georgian-Abkhaz Coordinating Council, which was resumed in May after a five-year pause, deals with security related issues, the return of refugees and displaced persons, and economic and social issues. Three working groups operate in the frames of the Council to address these three directions.
