Russian Foreign Minister Calls for Restraint

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Russia is carefully watching developments in Kodori Gorge and has already warned Georgia not to violate an existing agreement on cease-fire and separation of forces made between Tbilisi and Sokhumi, RIA Novosti news agency reported on July 26.

?We hope that our Georgian counterparts will listen to our appeals,? the Russian Foreign Minister said on July 26.

Georgian troops are in upper Kodori Gorge, which is a Georgian-administrated part of breakaway Abkhazia, to confront a local rebel warlord. The sending of Georgian troops in the area triggered Sokhumi?s concerns. Tbilisi reiterated on July 26 that there are no plans for a large-scale military confrontation in the region.
