Defense Minister Condemns Russia’s ‘Foolish Moves’
Davit Kezerashvili, the Georgian defense minister, said on May 8 that Russia has already exceeded its quota by brining additional troops in Abkhazia.
“They [the Russian troops in Abkhazia] have already exceeded their quota long ago,” Kezerashvili told reporters. “But we have witnessed such foolish moves taken by Russia recently that it will not surprise us any more. I am sure that the international society and Georgia will give a proper assessment to it.”
The Georgian Defense Minister made these remarks after the Russian MoD warned that it would send even more soldiers – but within the agreed limits – if the Georgian side continued “a further military build-up” in the region. In a statement issued on May 8 the Russian Ministry of Defense said that Russia had increased the number of its peacekeepers in Abkhazia to 2,542 peacekeepers, which is 458 short of the 3,000 limit set by agreement.
