Opposition Calls for Rally on Polling Day
The nine-party opposition bloc called on supporters to rally outside the Central Election Commission (CEC) on the election day, May 21.
MP Levan Gachechiladze, the leader of the nine-party bloc, said on May 1 that the rally would aim at “protecting votes” and preventing rigging of the parliamentary elections.
The nine-party bloc rallied outside the CEC on May 1, which grew into a scuffle between the opposition leaders and activists with the police, which prevented them from entering inside the CEC administrative building. Opposition wanted to go inside to, as the leaders said, “nail up the doors” of CEC chairman Levan Tarkhnishvili’s office. But after being prevented from entering the building, MP Gachechiladze personally nailed up two boards one of the windows of the CEC building. After doing so he threw hammer towards policemen protecting the entrance of the building.
Meanwhile, the opposition bloc plans to rally outside the Parliament on May 7 under the banner “Remember November 7” – when the riot police broke up the opposition’s demonstration at several occasions in Tbilisi.
