‘Russia May be Paving Way for Abkhaz Recognition’ – EU Official

“There is a growing preoccupation and anxiety that Russia may be paving the way for recognition of Abkhazia,” Reuters reported, quoting EU External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner.

She was speaking at a news conference in Brussels on March 10 ahead of an EU foreign ministers’ meeting. She said the ministers would discuss Georgia, in particular how “to support more strongly Georgia in a difficult situation.”

“Georgia’s territorial integrity has always been clearly supported by the EU…this is absolutely clear,” she added.

Last week Russia pulled out from the 1996 CIS treaty imposing sanctions on Abkhazia – a move described by Tbilisi as “immoral” and “very dangerous.”

The EU external relations commissioner also said Sweden and Poland had called on other EU member states to do more to stabilize Georgia ahead of the country’s parliamentary election in May. She said EU help could include easier visas and a trade pact.
