Opposition Rejects Saakashvili Call for Cooperation
Most opposition parties have rejected President Saakashvili’s call for cooperation in the face of, what he called, external threats.
“The only thing the Georgian government has to do, if it really wants to pave the way towards the resolution of the Abkhaz conflict, is to immediately pull out from the Commonwealth of Independent States. All the rest is just a PR stunt by Saakashvili, which is not aimed at resolving the conflict,” Davit Usupashvili, the Republican Party leader, said.
“Saakashvili has used cooperation with the opposition several times in the past just for his PR stunts. We are not going to talk with Saakashvili, who has totally lost the confidence of the people,” MP Manana Nachkebia of the New Rights Party said.
“The only issue we can talk about with Saakashvili is his resignation,” Giorgi Gugava of the Labor Party said.
The eight party opposition coalition leader, MP Levan Gachechiladze, said the bloc would announce its decision at a protest rally, planned outside Parliament at 2pm local time on March 9.
Only Industrialist Party leader Zurab Tkemaladze said he was ready to engage in talks with the authorities over the matter.
