Putin Comments on Georgia, Ukraine’s NATO Aspirations
The decision to join NATO should be made by the peoples of Georgia and Ukraine and not by the political elites of these countries, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on March 8.
“We will agree with any choice of the Ukrainian and Georgian peoples, of the peoples and not their political elites,” Russian news agencies quoted Putin as saying at a joint press conference with visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
In a plebiscite on January 5, 77% of Georgians voted for Georgia’s integration into NATO.
