Tbilisi Develops ‘Road Map’ to Improve Ties with Moscow

Tbilisi will develop “a road map” in the next few weeks on improving Russo-Georgian relations, Gela Bezhuashvili, the acting foreign minister, said on January 22.

Speaking after meeting with the Georgian diplomatic corps – in Tbilisi for the presidential inauguration – Bezhuashvili said the Georgian side was willing to “compromise, but not at the expense of our national interests.”

“Reciprocal steps are needed to improve ties,” he said. “That means equality in the relationship, the removal of all obstacles, including the [economic] embargo, and the opening of the border. We need to think how we can improve relations.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said after holding a series of meetings in Tbilisi after President Saakashvili’s inauguration on January 20 that agreement had been reached on “concrete steps” to improve ties between the two countries. He, however, did not give details.
