May Parliamentary Elections Planned
Parliamentary elections will most likely be held sometime in May, Mikheil Machavariani, the acting parliamentary speaker, said in Parliament on January 18.
“The elections will probably be held in May, but constitutional amendments are first required,” Machavariani told lawmakers. “Therefore, we’ll have to rush them through in February.”
In a plebiscite held simultaneously with the presidential election on January 5, 69.8% of voters said they wanted parliamentary elections to be held this spring, instead of late 2008, as envisaged by the constitution.
