Opposition Will Negotiate Only on Vote Recount with Authorities

Talks with the authorities are possible on only one issue – a recount of votes, the nine-party opposition coalition challenging the January 5 presidential election results, said in a statement.

The statement was made in response to acting President Nino Burjanadze’s call for dialogue. She said on January 14 it was time to move the political processes “from the street to the negotiating table.”

“We demand that the authorities publish and give us, observers and media outlets, access to video footage from cameras installed in southern Georgia … This is a very simple way to get a proper picture,” MP Kakha Kukava said at a press conference on January 14.

The opposition claims that “unbelievably high voter turnout” was noted, specifically in some precincts in Akhalkalaki, Akhaltsikhe, Ninotsminda, Tsalka, Bolnisi, Marneuli and Gardabani (districts predominately populated by ethnically Armenian and Azerbaijani minorities in the Samtskhe-Javakheti and Kvemo Kartli regions in the south of the country).

The opposition claims that the Central Election Commission (CEC) is deliberately dragging its feet, trying to stymie opposition demands for the footage. Cameras were focused on the registration desk and the ballot box in polling stations. The footage, MP Kukava said, would make it possible to compare actual voter turnout with the one formally registered by election officials.

The opposition bloc also said it would appeal the CEC’s final vote tally for the election to Tbilisi City Court.
