NATO on Georgia’s Elections

NATO has welcomed the January 5 presidential election in Georgia, saying it was “an important step in Georgia’s democratic development”, and promised to deepen its Intensified Dialogue (ID) with Georgia.

“We welcome the initial evaluation of the conduct of presidential elections in Georgia, which indicated that this was a viable expression of the free choice of the Georgian people,” James Appathurai, NATO spokesman, said on January 8.

He also stressed that all irregularities identified by international observers should be addressed before parliamentary elections expected this spring.

“NATO will continue to deepen its Intensified Dialogue with Georgia, and support further efforts to meet Euro-Atlantic standards,” the NATO spokesman said.
