
Acting President Pardons Two Ex-Officials
Sulkhan Molashvili, ex-chairman of the chamber of control ? the state audit agency – and Davit Mirtskhulava, former energy minister, were released from jail after being pardoned by acting President Nino Burjanadze.
Both former officials in ex-President Shevardnadze?s administration were arrested following the November 2003 Rose Revolution. Molashvili was arrested in April 2004 and accused of misappropriating state funds. He was sentenced to nine years imprisonment; however later in March 2006 his term was reduced to eight years.
Mirtskhulava was arrested in December 2003 and found guilty of abuse of office while serving as Minister during 2000-2003. He was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment. However, in July 2006 his term was reduced to seven years and six months.
