‘United Georgia in NATO in Next Presidential Term’ – Saakashvili

Presidential candidate Mikheil Saakashvili said Georgia would, if he were re-elected, become a NATO member and would be re-united during his second presidential term. He acknowledged, however, that EU membership would not happen so quickly.

“I know that we will join NATO during my second presidential term,” he said on a live late-night political talk show on Rustavi 2 TV. “Although we may not become an EU member – and I can in fact tell you that we won’t become an EU member – we  will move closer to European structures. I do not want anyone to ever speak about Georgia as a second-rate country.”

He also said: “I will bequeath a re-united Georgia to my successor.”
