Bagapsh: Sokhumi Interested in Stable, Democratic Georgia
Georgia?s failure to develop strong democratic institutions poses a threat to stability in the region, Sergey Bagapsh, the Abkhaz leader, said on December 4.
?There is a bad tendency of regime change in Georgia through revolutions,? Bagapsh?s official website quoted him as saying. ?If there is no genuine democracy in Georgia, there will be no stability there and it is bad for all of its neighbors.?
He said that stability in Georgia was in Sokhumi?s interests.
Speaking at a news conference in Sokhumi, Bagapsh also said that the Abkhaz side was intending to tighten security at the border with Georgia from December 8.
?We should probably expect provocations in the near future,? he said. ?We should be ready for them in the run-up to the upcoming presidential elections in Georgia and also against the background of the expected resolution of the Kosovo impasse.?
