Government, Businesses Raise GEL 15 mln for Social Assistance
At least 15 Georgian companies pledged to donate GEL 5 million to a special fund designed to assist socially vulnerable people at a meeting with PM Lado Gurgenidze on November 30.
PM Gurgenidze said that it was a joint initiative of the Georgian government and the Georgian business community. He said the effort would be repeated annually for the next few years.
?I am really proud of you,? PM Gurgenidze told executives from the fifteen companies. ?For every lari raised by the Georgian business community, the state will contribute another two lari.?
The state, as a result, will allocate GEL 10 million for the fund.
The prime minister said it was still possible for other businesses to make a contribution.
Focusing on social problems has emerged as a major issue for presidential candidate Mikheil Saakashvili.
PM Gurgenidze told lawmakers on November 22 that his and the cabinet?s immediate goal was to focus more on social issues, while maintaining reform efforts and current economic policy in general.
