Moscow Says Ties with Georgia in ‘Sharp Crisis’

Georgia’s attempts to blame Russia for its internal problems have “transformed bilateral relations into phase of sharp crisis,” Grigory Karasin, the Russian deputy foreign minister, told his Georgian counterpart, Nikoloz Vashakidze at a meeting in Moscow on November 9.

The Georgian authorities have accused some of the opposition politicians of cooperating with the Russian intelligence in an attempt to overthrow the government.

The Russian Foreign Ministry complained in a separate statement on November 9 about abuse of rights of Russian journalists in Georgia.

“Cases of physical assaults on journalists from the Russian TV companies Russia Today, Ren TV and NTV have been reported [during the November 7 unrests in Tbilisi] and broadcast of the Russian televisions through the local Georgian cable networks,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Some cable networks, not all of them, in Tbilisi were providing the Russian TV stations on November 9. BBC World and CNN International, as well as EuroNews were unavailable on some cable networks for two days.
