Moscow Says Human Rights Violated in Georgia

Russia is deeply concerned about the violation of human rights in Georgia, Mikhail Kaminin, a Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, said at a news conference in Moscow on November 8.

?The use of excessive force against protesters, the arrest of opposition figures and human rights activists, the banning of free media sources, the beating of foreign reporters cannot be described other than a rough and mass violation of human rights and democratic freedoms,? Kaminin said.

He called on the UN, OSCE, the Council of Europe and human rights organizations to urge Tbilisi ?to stop the violence? and resolve problems through constitutional means.

Kaminin pointed out that two Russian reporters had been injured when riot police broke up protest rallies in Tbilisi on November 7. He demanded that the Georgian authorities immediately investigate the incident and punish the perpetrators.

?We want to stress that Russia is no enemy of Georgia; it is a friend of Georgia and the Georgian people,? Kaminin added.
