Burjanadze Condemns Attacks on Protesters in Zugdidi

Several persons suspected of attacking peaceful protesters in Zugdidi have been detained, Nino Burjanadze, the Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson, said on October 29.

Burjanadze said she discussed the matter with Vano Merabishvili, the interior minister, and Zurab Adeishvili, the general prosecutor.

Two opposition lawmakers and at least two other opposition activists were attacked and beaten up by a group of young men in Zugdidi. The opposition has alleged that police officers were among attackers.

?Neither the authorities, nor a great part of the opposition need what happened yesterday in Zugdidi,? Burjanadze said at a session of the Parliament?s bureau on October 29. ?Incidents of this type serve the purposes of Georgia?s ill-wishers.?

?Unfortunately, police failed to avoid this incident,? she said.
