Gazprom Chief Meets S.Ossetian Leader
Alexei Miller, the chairman of the Russian energy giant Gazprom, met with South Ossetian secessionist leader Eduard Kokoity in Moscow on October 23.
Gas supplies to South Ossetia and the construction of a new gas pipeline linking the breakaway region with the neighboring Russian republic of North Ossetia were discussed, Gazprom said in a statement posted on its website.
Gazprom began construction of the pipeline in North Ossetia last December, prompting protests from Tbilisi. PromGaz, a daughter company of Gazprom?s, is in charge of the project, which is reportedly worth 15 billion Rubles (over USD 580 million). The project is funded by Gazprom.
The pipeline between Dzuarikau in North Ossetia to the breakaway South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali, with a total length of 163 km, will have the capacity to deliver 252.5 million cubic meters of gas per year, according to Gazprom.
