New CEC Chief Appointed

Parliament unanimously approved Levan Tarkhnishvili as the chairman of the Central Election Commission on October 12.

Opposition lawmakers, who were against the candidacy, abstained. The opposition says Tarkhnishvili, who is believed to have close links with the ruling party, in particular, with the influential lawmaker, Giga Bokeria, would fail to generate public trust because of those links.

?We think that the nomination of such an unprofessional person as CEC Chairman has only one goal ? to ensure the authorities maintain full control over the election administration and to thwart free and democratic elections,? Kakha Kukava, a lawmaker from the Conservative Party, said in a statement.

Tarkhnishvili, 36, had served as the chairman of the Board of the Georgian Public Broadcaster since 2005.
