Sokhumi Slams Saakashvili’s UN Speech
The Foreign Ministry of breakaway Abkhazia has criticized President Saakashvili’s speech at the UN General Assembly, saying that the Georgian president had tried to mislead the international community.
It also said that any attempts to replace the Russian peacekeeping forces by, as it put it, so-called ‘independent’ and ‘unbiased’ forces would “lead the peace process to deadlock and will thwart any attempts to improve relations between Abkhazia and Georgia.”
“Judging by the Georgian president’s speech, one can say that Georgia is not ready to recognize its mistakes and assume responsibility. Georgia is also not ready for a peaceful resolution of the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict, and is deliberately trying to destabilize the situation,” the unrecognized republic’s Foreign Ministry said.
The Abkhaz Foreign Ministry also claimed that “by neglecting the recommendations of the UN Secretary General and describing them as “amoral and meager”, Georgia was reinforcing its military presence in the upper Kodori gorge “which may trigger an escalation in tensions.”
