U.S. Embassy Denies Missile Shield Link
The U.S. embassy in Tbilisi has denied media reports that American experts were visiting Georgia to study the feasibility of constructing an air radar station in the country.
Both Georgian and Russian media sources reported on September 25 that the same group of experts, which was visiting an airport in Batumi in Adjara, last week had visited Azerbaijan to study the possibility of integrating Russia?s Gabala radar station into a European missile shield.
?It is not true. The US team in Georgia has no connection with proposed Missile Defense assets in Europe,? the US embassy said on September 26. ?This visit [to Batumi] was a long scheduled visit to examine the facilities of the airport, and its emergency landing capacity.?
