Reports Say Ex-Interior Minister Considers Political Comeback

Koba Narchemashvili, who served as Interior Minister in ex-President Eduard Shevardnadze?s administration, is planning a political comeback, Georgian media sources reported on September 18.

Narchemashvili has been in talks with the opposition New Rights party for the past month, Teona Doliashvili, a party spokesperson, has confirmed.

?However, the party hasn’t made a final decision yet,? she told Civil.Ge on September 18.

Narchemashvili?s brother, Lasha Narchemashvili, is a lawmaker and a member of the New Rights parliamentary faction.

Narchemashvili, however, told Imedi and Rustavi 2 TV that he was not thinking about political career yet.

Narchemashvili was Georgia?s Interior Minister in 2001-2003. In October 2004 he was arrested and charged with misuse of power while serving as Minister.

Narchemashvili denied the charges and claimed his arrest was retaliation by the Saakashvili?s administration for not supporting the Rose Revolution. He was released in late December 2004, following a plea bargain and a fine of GEL 300,000.
