TV for Gali to be Launched ‘Soon’
A new television station will be launched in the predominately Georgian-populated Gali district of Abkhazia “very soon,” the Abkhaz leader’s deputy spokesman, Alkhas Cholokua, told Apsnipress news agency on September 5.
“Equipment will be installed in the next few days,” he said.
Earlier the authorities in breakaway Abkhazia said that the project was of “strategic importance” in terms of integrating the ethnic Georgian population of the Gali district into the Abkhaz state.
Georgian media sources recently reported that the station launch had been delayed. Cholokua, however, denied this, saying the reports were groundless.
The station will, reportedly, broadcast news programs in Abkhaz, Russian and Megrelian (the latter is spoken mainly in the western Georgian region of Samegrelo).
