Vice-Speaker Considered as Central Bank Chief ? MP Says

An opposition lawmaker from the Republican Party, Levan Berdzenishvili, has said that Vice-Speaker of the Parliament Mikheil Machavariani may be nominated as the central bank’s chief.

Speaking in an interview with Imedi TV on September 5, MP Berdzenishvili suggested that Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze would endorse either her close ally, MP Irakli Kovzanadze, the chairman of the parliamentary committee for budgetary and financial issues, or her deputy, Mikheil Machavariani, for the position.

?Either of the two is acceptable to Burjanadze,? MP Berdzenishvili said.

When asked to comment on the speculation, Burjanadze responded to Imedi TV: ?I can not say anything about it.?

So far, the ex-finance minister, Lexo Alexishvili, remains the only nominee for the position. Burjanadze, however, has said she would not support the nomination.
