‘Olympic Conference’ Planned for Abkhazia

Breakaway Abkhazia is planning a conference this October in an attempt to incorporate itself into the preparations for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games.

The international conference – Olympic Corridor – is expected to gather up to 100 guests, including businesspeople and some Russian regional governors, according to the Abkhaz lawmaker, Lev Shamba, who is one of the organizers of the event.

The conference planned for October 20-22 is organized by the breakaway region’s parliament, presidential administration and the local municipalities of Sokhumi, Gagra and Pitsunda (Bichvinta), according to the Abkhaz leader’s press office.

The Abkhaz leader, Sergey Bagapsh, said in early August that although no official proposal had been made by the Russian authorities about Abkhazia’s involvement in preparations for the Sochi Olympics, consultations were held with private Russian companies on using construction materials available in Abkhazia for building Olympic facilities.
