Number of Tourists Hits Record High, Sokhumi Claims

The number of tourists traveling to Abkhazia has hit a record high this year, Said Tarkil, the deputy head of the Abkhaz customs service, told Apsnipress news agency on August 1.

Despite simplified border clearance procedures on the Russian border, he said cars and buses were frequently lined up at the checkpoint on the river Psou.

He said at least 600 vehicles and 70 buses cross the border into Abkhazia everyday. The flow has been so great an additional bridge over the river is planned.
