Tbilisi Warns Against Buying Assets in Breakaway Regions

Georgia has once again warned foreigners against purchasing assets in Georgia?s breakaway regions.

?Any foreign investor involved in such a transaction will be subject to civil and, possibly, criminal liability”, Giorgi Manjgaladze, the Georgian deputy foreign minister, said on July 31. “Accordingly, subsequent to the full restoration of Georgian jurisdiction over the territories of the conflict regions, any illegally acquired property will be returned to its legitimate owner.?

Manjgaladze’s comments follow his meeting on July 30 with foreign diplomats accredited in Georgia to discuss the issue.

The warning is mostly targeted at Russia. Russian state agencies, officials and private companies are among those who have purchased assets, mainly holiday villas in Abkhazia, according to a document issued by the Georgian Ministry for Refugees and Accommodation.
