Russia Further Eases Visa Rules for Georgia

Russia will start issuing visas for educational, business, working and transit purposes to Georgian citizens from July 19, the Russian embassy in Georgia said.

?The willingness of the Russian side to move forward towards a stabilization of Russian-Georgian relations is the reason behind the decision. We hope that the Georgian side will also take reciprocal and constructive steps to improve bilateral relations,? the Russian embassy said in a statement.

Russia stopped issuing visas to Georgian citizens last October, following a spy row. Air, sea, land and railway links, and postal communication with Georgia were also cut.

In May 2007, Russia partially restored the visa regime, with Georgian citizens, who had Russian relatives, eligible for consideration.
