Greens Party Evicted from Office

Dozens of policemen evicted the Green Party of Georgia (GPG) from its office in Tbilisi on May 11 after the city’s municipality canceled an office space leasing contract with the party.

?They had no right to cancel this agreement? This is robbery,? Gia Gachechiladze, leader of the Green Party, told reporters.

GPG, an opposition group which was influential in the early 1990s, had a contract with the Tbilisi municipality to lease the office space in a downtown park until 2014.

In a statement issued on May 8 the European Greens Party (EGP) condemned the Tbilisi municipality?s decision.

?The Georgian Greens have been given no legitimate reason why they should be evicted and so we can only assume that it is a form of political discrimination,? Philippe Lamberts, EGP spokesperson, said.

EGP, which is a coalition of green parties in Europe, of which the GPG is a member, called on the Georgian authorities ?to reverse the decision to evict the Georgian Greens from their office.?
