Georgian Officials Meet Russian Ambassador
Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze and Vice-Speaker of the Parliament Mikheil Machavariani held talks with Russian Ambassador to Tbilisi Vyacheslav Kovalenko on April 13 to discuss bilateral relations.
?I asked Mr. Ambassador to hold bilateral meetings at the level of parliamentarians either in Tbilisi or in Moscow. I have already sent a relevant letter to the Russian State Duma,? Vice-Speaker Machavariani told reporters after the meeting.
The Russian Ambassador, however, declined to make any comments.
Reportedly, the recent row surrounding the reburial of the remains of Russian diplomat and playwright Alexander Griboedov was also discussed. Speculation had been rife that the authorities were planning to remove the remains from the Mtatsminda Pantheon in Tbilisi.
Burjanadze, at a news briefing on April 12, denied that there were such plans. ?I am surprised at how media sources and certain politicians are capable of whipping up such a frenzy,” she said. “There is no ground for such allegations.?
