Georgian PM Discusses Abkhazia at UN Security Council
The Georgian authorities remain committed to the peaceful resolution of the Abkhaz conflict, Georgian Prime Minister Zurab Nogaideli said while addressing the UN Security Council. He said, however, that Abkhazia?s status should be defined within the internationally recognized borders of Georgia
The prime minister’s remarks were made during a session on April 10 devoted to a new resolution on Abkhazia.
In his speech Nogaideli focused on the issues of return of refugees and internally displaced persons to the entire territory of Abkhazia, the shelling of the Tbilisi-controlled upper Kodori Gorge and the current situation in the Gali district of breakaway Abkhazia, the Georgian Foreign Ministry reported.
Nogaideli stressed that Tbilisi is ready for a bilateral dialogue with separatists, even at the highest level. He also expressed hope that the UN Security Council would condemn the recently held self-styled local and parliamentary elections in Abkhazia.
The UN Security Council is expected to adopt a new resolution on Abkhazia that will prolong the mandate of the UN Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG) for another six months.
