Russian Embassy Wants to Boost Russian Language Among Youth

The Russian Embassy in Tbilisi wants to open a Russian-language school in Tbilisi in an attempt to revitalize Georgian youth?s fading interests in the Russian language, according to the Georgian Ministry for Education and Science.

The issue was discussed during a meeting between Russian Ambassador Vyacheslav Kovalenko and Georgian Education Minister Alexander Lomaia on March 14.

Ambassador Kovalenko expressed ?regret that less and less teenagers in Georgia speak Russian,? according to the Georgian Education Ministry.

?The fact that the youth does not see a reason for learning the Russian language may be the motive behind this trend, especially against the background of Russia?s political-economic sanctions against Georgia,? Education Minister Alexander Lomaia said.

During the meeting, Minister Lomaia protested against the granting of Russian graduate diplomas to students of the Tskhinvali State University of breakaway South Ossetia.
