Opposition Files Questions Ahead of President’s Annual Address

MP Davit Gamkrelidze, leader of the New Rights Party, said there are a number of major issues that his party wants President Saakashvili to address during his third annual state of the nation address to the Parliament on March 15.

MP Gamkrelidze said that he has to file questions through the media, as the President has refused to field questions after his address.

Among topics that he wants the president to address, he listed the “non-transparent privatization” process, including the sale of energy facilities to Energo-Pro and the newly constructed Tbilisi airport terminal; the “weak and government-controlled” judiciary system; and concerns over private property rights.

MP Gamkrelidze said that society has “legitimate questions” about the high-profile murder cases of Sandro Girgvliani and Amiran Robakidze that need to be answered by the President.

“The President’s failure to address this issue would mean that Interior Minister [Vano] Merabishvili either has serious compromising materials on Saakashvili, or Saakashvili himself has become a part of this gang,” MP Gamkrelidze said.
