Lawmakers Call on UN for ‘Appropriate’ Abkhaz Resolution
The Georgian Parliament’s commission on territorial integrity expressed hope that the UN Security Council will adopt “an appropriate resolution” on Abkhazia when it gathers on April 15 to discuss situation in the conflict zone.
In a statement issued on March 7 the commission noted that Russia’s stance on the Abkhaz elections, which is at odds with most of the international community, emphasizes the fact that the Russian Federation is a biased actor backing the secessionist authorities of Abkhazia.
The commission stated that Moscow’s position undermines the efficiency and impartiality of the Russian peacekeeping forces stationed in the Abkhaz conflict zone under the auspices of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
In previous resolutions on Abkhazia the UN Security Council has hailed the important “stabilizing role” of Russian peacekeeping troops in the conflict zone.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Commission on Territorial Integrity MP Shota Malashkhia said in a recent interview that Tbilisi wants this claim to be removed from future resolutions.
