Tbilisi Condemns Abkhaz Polls
The Georgian Foreign Ministry described the March 4 parliamentary elections in breakaway Abkhazia as ?another in a series of unlawful acts?, adding that ?any kind of reference to the legitimacy of the so-called elections is immoral and cynical.?
In a statement issued on March 5 the Georgian Foreign Ministry called on the international community ?to duly assess the attempts to legitimize the situation in the region and prevent any kind of support for aggressive separatism.?
The statement also stressed that the so-called elections were held in a region ?where over half a million peaceful citizens of various ethnic origins were subject to mass expulsion as a result of the separatist regime?s ethnic cleansing campaign.?
?It is worth noting that the so-called elections were held throughout the region?s entire territory, and the Gali district in particular, by putting enormous pressure on the population, which faces increasing intimidation from the Sokhumi regime?s so-called law-enforcers,? the Georgian Foreign Ministry said.
