PM Speaks of ‘Ambitious Plans’ in South Ossetia

Georgian Prime Minister Zurab Nogaideli said on February 28 that the government is implementing “ambitious plans” that will involve a total of GEL 20 million (about 11.7 million USD) in investments in the South Ossetian conflict zone.

“Within the frames of these plans, almost all the villages of the conflict zone will be given gas… Water supply systems will be rehabilitated. As a result, water will be supplied not only to the villages of the [Tbilisi-controlled] Didi Liakhvi Gorge, but directly to Tskhinvali. I hope that it will be so,” Nogaideli said at the government’s session.

It was not immediately clear from PM Nogaideli’s remarks whether the GEL 20 million will consist only of funding from the Georgian government, or if it includes funding pledged for South Ossetian infrastructure rehabilitation at a donors’ conference in Brussels last year.

Georgian Finance Minister Lexo Alexishvili said on February 21 that the 2007 state budget allocated GEL 6 million (about USD 3.5 million) to develop infrastructure in the Georgian-controlled areas of the South Ossetian conflict zone.
