Saakashvili’s State of Nation Address Postponed
President Saakashvili’s third annual state of the nation address to parliament, initially scheduled for this week, has been postponed because of Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko’s official visit to Georgia on March 1-2.
Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze said earlier that Saakashvili will deliver his speech either on March 1 or on March 2; however, speaking at the parliamentary bureau session on February 26 Burjanadze confirmed that the plans have changed.
The exact date of the president’s address to the parliament and its format are currently unknown.
Opposition parliamentarians say that they want the president to field questions following the speech, while MPs from the ruling majority say that the president will himself choose the format of his address.
