Draft Law Proposed to Cancel Transport Regulatory Commission

The Georgian National Commission for Transport Regulation will become part of the Economy Ministry and will be financed from the state budget and not from taxes collected from the companies operating in the transport business, according to a draft law submitted to parliament for consideration.

Calling it a ?leech? and ?parasite,? President Saakashvili gave an order to close down the commission, an independent body regulating Georgia’s air, rail, and road transport, on February 21.

The move has been described by Georgian media sources as a victory of State Minister for Economic Reforms Kakha Bendukidze who has long been calling for the cancellation of the commission.

Kakha Bendukidze said on February 21 that the commission should only be in charge of security standards in the transportation sector of the country.
