Consider ENP Commitments Thoroughly – Saakashvili Tells Ministers
It is ?desirable but not essential? to approve a document outlining the Georgian government?s targets for implementing the EU Neighborhood Policy (ENP) Action Plan ?hastily,? President Saakashvili told the government session on February 21.
He said that the government should thoroughly consider the commitments it is planning to undertake in frames of the ENP Action Plan.
?I want to ask the ministers ? how many of you have read this document? Raise your hands those who have read this document [the European Neighborhood Action Plan],? he told the cabinet members.
?I want to tell you that if you are ready to approve it today, just approve it – and if not, read it more attentively because it is a very important issue. The Ministry of European Integration has done a good job. But we should understand that this is the entire government?s action plan. We should study how to interact with the European Union. We should meet the undertaken commitments and we should undertake these commitments only after thorough consideration. We should not simply sign these or those commitments, thinking that either they [EU] will forget about it or we will cheat them. They will not forget anything and we will not cheat anyone. Everything should be done seriously within the strategic tasks of the State. Therefore, I ask you to study this document thoroughly. It is desirable but not essential to approve it hastily. We should think over it thoroughly and only afterwards should it be approved by the government. I would repeat that this will be the government?s action plan for years and everyone will have an opportunity to participate in it,? Saakashvili said.
