S.Ossetia ‘Alternative Leader’ Comments on Talks with CoE Official
Dimitri Sanakoev, the Tbilisi-loyal self-imposed leader of South Ossetia, said he had very result-oriented conversation with Council of Europe (CoE) Commissioner for Human Rights Thomas Hammarberg, and added that he does not want “to politicize this meeting.”
After holding talks with breakaway South Ossetian authorities in Tskhinvali, Commissioner Hammarberg met with the so-called alternative authorities of South Ossetia in the Georgian village of Kurta on February 17.
“We have discussed the issue of protection of human rights and freedoms on the territory of South Ossetia. The main thing we achieved during the meeting is that we have agreed to cooperate in this sphere. We will develop democratic institutions; we will build a normal civil society. In this regard the mission of Mr. Hammarberg to our republic will play a positive role. We will fully observe the laws related to the protection of human rights and freedoms on our territory. In future we will have good progress in this regard,” Dimitri Sanakoev told reporters after meeting with the CoE Commissioner.
