Saakashvili Hails ‘Significant Decline’ of Crime Rate
On February 13 President Saakashvili hailed the Georgian police efforts that have led, as he put it, to a “significant decline” in the country’s crime rate.
“The crime rate has decreased significantly in Georgia. For example, if before the Rose Revolution there were 16 cases of stealing cars per day, today the figure has decreased to 1 or 2 per month. It means that car theft, as a category of crime, does not actually exist any more, and the same is true in respect to other types of crimes,” President Saakashvili said.
President Saakashvili was speaking with reporters after visiting the new laboratory facility of the National Forensic Bureau, which was equipped with assistance from the U.S. Depart of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL).
It is the only laboratory in the Caucasus capable of DNA testing. The lab’s scope of forensic testing and analysis also includes: narcotics testing, petroleum testing, finger print classification, forged currency, and forged travel documents.
