Bagapsh Concerned over South Ossetia Tensions
Abkhaz leader Sergey Bagapsh expressed concern over increased tensions in breakaway South Ossetia and called on the international community “to make Georgia meet its commitments.”
In a statement posted on his official web-site on February 2, Sergey Bagapsh said that the Georgian side is responsible for aggravating the situation in the South Ossetian conflict zone.
?Official Sokhumi has numerous times drawn the international community?s attention to instances of terror and regular attempts to destabilize the situation both in South Ossetia and in Abkhazia by the Georgian side,? Bagapsh said.
A series of violent incidents have recently occurred in the South Ossetian conflict zone. On February 1 a Georgian checkpoint near the village of Ergneti came under mortar fire. A similar incident took place on January 28 when three South Ossetian militiamen were injured as a result of shootout near Tskhinvali, and shooting was also reported on January 29 near Ergneti village.
