Abkhaz Official: Tbilisi’s Demand on Border Control ‘Unreal’
Georgia’s demand to deploy its officials on the Abkhaz border with Russia is “ridiculous,” Stanislav Lakoba, Secretary of the National Security Council of breakaway Abkhazia said in a comments posted on the Abkhaz leader’s official web-site on January 29.
Tbilisi wants Russia to legalize trade at the two border crossing points with Georgia located in the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as a precondition for Georgia’s go-ahead to Russia’s WTO accession.
“This [demand] is unreal. And I think that Tbilisi understands it very well. I just think that Tbilisi’s effort to continue pushing for this issue is just a face-saving attempt. Final outcome of these talks is already clear. It is impossible to meet Georgia’s demand,” Lakoba said.
