EU, OSCE to Cooperate ‘Intensively’ on Conflict Resolution

Officials from the EU and OSCE have pledged “to cooperate more intensively” in tackling the regional conflicts in the Southern Caucasus and Transnistria at a first meeting of the EU Troika and the OSCE which took place on January 23.


“The aim is to bring about a peaceful solution to these conflicts, which would pave the way for democratic and economic development,” a press release posted on the German EU Presidency web site reads.


Günter Gloser, the German Minister of State for Europe, Javier Solana, High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy, and Manuel Lobo Antunes, Portuguese State Secretary for European Affairs, represented the EU Troika. The OSCE was represented by the Chairman-in-Office, Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Ángel Moratinos.


Speaking to the European Parliament in Strasbourg on January 17, German Chancellor Angel Merkel said “Russia’s conflicts with its neighbours must not be taboo” in a dialogue between the EU and Russia.
