Zourabichvili: New Constitution Not a Priority

Leader of the opposition party Georgia?s Way and ex-Foreign Minister Salome Zourabichvili said on January 11 that drafting a new constitution is not currently a priority for Georgia. She said that the dialogue between the opposition and the authorities should mainly focus on the most painful issues that are currently affecting society.

Speaking at a news conference, Zourabichvili said that the opposition and authorities should be engaged in discussing energy issues, security, privatization, and Russo-Georgian relations.

President Saakashvili said on January 10 that dialogue with the opposition is of vital importance, and offered to invite opposition lawmakers to attend, as he put it, extended sessions of the National Security Council.

He also said that the country needs a new constitution, which should be drafted in close cooperation with all political parties.
