Tbilisi Condemns Shooting in South Ossetia

Two similar incidents occurred in the South Ossetian conflict zone on December 18 and 19, when unknown gunmen opened fire at the police station in the Georgian village of Avnevi, near the Russian peacekeepers? checkpoint, causing no casualties, the Office of the Georgian State Minister for Conflict Resolution Issues said in a statement.

?The Avnevi police seem to create serious problems to criminal groups, which, along with other criminal activities, are actively involved in smuggling,? the statement reads.

The Georgian side claims that the ?ineffective mechanism? of the peacekeeping operation fails to ensure the safety of the local peaceful population of the region.
