Tskhinvali Denies Links with Counterfeiting Operation
South Ossetian leader Eduard Kokoity has strongly denied allegations that counterfeit U.S. dollars are produced in his unrecognized republic, the South Ossetian Press and Information Committee reported on November 27.
?No fake money is produced on the territory of South Ossetia… Moreover, I reaffirm that the South Ossetian authorities are ready to assist any law enforcement agency, regardless of which state it belongs to, in probing into the origin of these fake dollars…Any investigation will confirm that no blame should be put on South Ossetia,? Kokoity said.
The Washington Post reported on November 26 that the U.S. Secret Service and Georgian police are investigating an international counterfeiting operation that stretches from breakaway South Ossetia to the United States.
?Today Georgia makes a statement about counterfeiting money in South Ossetia and trustful (or well-instructed) American press disseminates this slander with pleasure? South Ossetia is neither Iraq nor Iran and Washington?s plans will not work here,? the South Ossetian leader said.
