Latvia Pledges to Support Georgia’s NATO Aspirations

Latvian Defense Minister Atis Slakteris will host events with Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze’s participation in Riga on November 27 in a sign to demonstrate Latvia’s support to Georgia’s NATO aspirations, the Latvian Ministry of Defense said.

Talks between Burjanadze and Slakteris, which will also involve U.S. Senator Richard J. Lugar, will take place on the eve of the NATO summit scheduled for November 28-29 in Riga.

“Our country gained invaluable knowledge through our experience on the way to NATO integration and we want to offer Georgia all of that experience to help Georgia on her road now,” Minister Slakteris said.

On 22 November 2006, the Saeima, the Latvian Parliament, overwhelmingly adopted a declaration in support of Georgia’s NATO aspirations.
