New Chief of Financial Police Appointed

Davit Karseladze was appointed as new Chief of the Financial Police replacing Davit Kezerashvili, Finance Minister Lexo Alexishvili said on November 22.

Before the new appointment Karseladze served as a deputy chief in the investigation unit of the Financial Police ? a body that was set up in 2004 to fight economic crimes.

According to the new draft law, which is currently under consideration by Parliament, the Financial Police will merge into the tax and customs services from January, 2007. It is not yet know who will become chief of the new structure, which will be called the Revenue Service.

?It is untimely to speculate who will lead the Revenue Service, whether it will be Karseladze, or another person,? Finance Minister Lexo Alexishvili told reporters on November 22.

The position of the chief of Financial Police was vacant since November 10, when Davit Kezerashvili was appointed as new Defense Minister.
